Jai Shree Krishna

What is Kan Jagayi? When and how 'Kan-Jagayi' in Haveli is done and on what day?

Jai Shree Krishna

Thakorji along with gopi’s proceeded towards the cow-pen and invited the cows in their ears to participate in Goverdhan Pooja. He requested them to come early and after the kani was said played with them for a while.

Kan Jagayi in the Haveli is usually celebrated on the night of Deepavali and Thakorji is placed in the Chowk of the temple. Not sure if this is correct, acquired this information from the Internet. Please do correct me if I am wrong

Jai Shree Krishna

Thank you Sitalji.

To find out the "Kan-jagai" Mahotsava, one should look at the background and also the history on how and when this utsava was introduced in Pushtimarg.

Lets caste our vision to Sarasvat kalp era. In Nandalaya (Castle Of Nandbaba, or Krishna/Nandbaba's resident), early mornings are always full of events and morning chores. One of the chores was to kan-jagai, that is to wake up Krushna.

If Yasoda maiya woke Shree Krushna then Gopis were left out and the darshan was difficult as Krushna will be out of their (Gopis) sight, and will be with Yasodaji, having snan, shringar and Magla. Yasodaji always maintained that these chores are private and Gopis were not allowed to partake in these chores, unless few chosen one are lucky enough to give hands to Yasoda ji.

On "Var-Tehevaar" (pious or auspicious) day, there were strict orders that Gopis were not allowed to disturb Kana (Krushna) in the morning as Yasodaji was to get Him ready and perform ceremony before public appearance. This rule made it difficult for "Maiyer" (milk-maid) Gopis as they had to get up very ealy and reach milk market to sell their milk, butter and butter-milk; and one of their daily chore was to enter Nandalaya and knock on Krishna's Bedroom windows and when Krishna appears at the window, they get opportunity to do darsan and let him have some of the Makhan, dadhi and chaash (butter-milk). This was their daily "Niyam" (routine). They (Gopis) felt that without darshan, they will not be able to sell their goods and Kano was "luck" Mukharvind which depicted auspicious events in the day.

Some times "Chowkidaar" (Guard) spotted these Gopis and they were chased away from Krushna's window. In this case, Gopis used to hide into cow-pen. In this pen, Krishna had a favourite cow called "Shurbhi". This was the only cow which could talk. Gopis used complain to Shurbhi and she used to relay the message to Krushna. Anyway, on this particular day, Gopis saw Shurbhi in the pen, she was fast asleep. They approach quietly, and one by one murmured "Kan Jagai re!" in Shurbhi's ears.

Shurbhi quickly got up and got few cows with her and went to Krushna's window and woke Him. When Krishna appeared at the window, Gopis did Krushna's darshan, this way they fulfilled their manorath.

This is how "Kan-Jagayi" event then was taken into Haveli Utsava. The day when Gopis did Kaan-jagai, that day was deepmala-day (Diwali) and since that day in Pushtimarg havelis does this utsava on Diwali. In sixth Gharana (sashtha-Ghar), this is a lovely utsava and darshan is very unique.

Jai Shree Krishna

Thanks for your patience, due to unfortunate insident with my computer, I was unable to surf and thus could not post the satsang tibari.

Well, with the grace of Shree Vallabh this predicament is now nearly ending and we will soon be able to do satsang as before.

My once again sincere appology.

Jai Shri Krishna,

Pushtidasji, Thank you for clarifying, and no need for apologies.
I was very curious to know what the darshans would be like, as you had mentioned that .."In sixth Gharana (sashtha-Ghar), this is a lovely utsava and darshan is very unique."
