Jai Jai Shri Gokulesh,

Unnatiji will try to explain

Defination Rasa: The nine feelings of the human being is called rasa.

In technical terms defination is as follows

RASA IS A COLLECTIVE RESULT OF VIBHAVA (THAT IS STIMULUS) ANUBHAVA (INVOLUNTARY RUN ) & VYBHIKARI BHAVA (VOLUNTARY RUN)

THE BASIC RASAS ARE 4 –
EROTIC (SHRINGARA),
COURAGE (VIRA),
TERROR (RAUDRA) AND h
DISGUST (BIBHATSA).
FURTHER,
HASYA (HUMOUR) IS DERIVED FROM SHRINGAR,
KARUNA(COMPASSION PATHOS) IS DERIVED FROM RAUDRA
ADBHUTA(WONDER,MAGICAL) FROM VIRA,AND
BHAYANAKA(DREAT)FROM BIBASTA.

ORIGIN , COLOUR , AND DEITIES OF RASAS.

RASA- COLOR- GOD
SHRINGARA- DARK BLUE- VISHNU
HASYA- WHITE- PARMATMA
RAUDRA- RED- RUDRA
KARUNA- PIGEON COLOR- YAMA
VIRA- YELLOWISH - MAHENDRA
ADBHUTA- YELLOW- BRAHMA
BIBHATSA- BLUE - MAHAKALA
BHAYANAKA- DARK- KALA
SHANTA- WHITE-

1) Shringara (Erotic)
Its based on love (Rathi) It results in the case of men women of healthy youth. It is of two kinds _
a)Sambhoga(fulfillment)
b)viprabambha
A)the shringara rasa must the expressed by doing looks, lifting or raising eyebrow, side glances, graceful steps and gestures. Which are fall Anubhavas (disvaluntary runs.)
B) The Vipralaambha shringara are dejection, fatigue, suspicious, jealousy, patience, sleepiness, dreaminess etc.,

2. Hasya: (Humor)
Its empressed by expansion of lips, nose, cheeks, wide staring, serration of eyes etc., are Anubhavas. The vyabhikakri bhavas are dissimulation, laziness, and sleepiness etc., Hasyam is of 2 types-
a) when one laughs oneself.
b) When one makes others laugh.
6 types of laughing are
a)Smitha(gentle laugh)
b)Hasitha (laughter)
c)vihasitha (bold style)
d)upaliasifha(satirical laughter)
e)Apahasita(silly laugh)
f)athi hasitha(loud laughter)

3. Raudra: (terror)
The rasa is momented with evil spirits & it comes fights. The stimulates for this rasa is anger boldness abuses, emulates and lies etc.
The Vyabhikari Bhavas are- cold Bloodedness, Excitement, Intolerance, Sweating etc.

4. Karuna: (pathos)
Karuna or pathos is the sathayi bhava of grief. It is stimulated by curse, pain, calamity, separation from near 7 dear ones etc. The anubhavas are shedding tears, pallor, drooping limbs etc. The Vyabhicari bhavas are disgust, exhaustion, fear, confusion etc.

5. Vira: (heroic)
It is produced by an energetic, determined, unrelenting nature which is neither taken by surprise nor by confusion. It comprises of challenging words and deeds showing courage, boldness, bravery, and self-confidence.

6. Adbhutha: ( Wonder or Magical)
It is stimulated by the sight of a divine person, by achieving the desired, by going to interesting places, temples etc.
The anubhavas are distended eyes, unthinking and steady glances, thrill, joy, words of appreciation, twisting the body, etc.
The Vyabhikari Bhavas are- being stunned, shedding tears, Stammering, excitement, joy, restlessness etc.

7. Bhibhatsa: (disgust)
It is stimulated by seeing or hearing undesirable, ugly, and evil things. It is acted by withdrawing the body, leering, spitting, and agitation. The Vyabhikari Bhavas are - Loss of memory, agitation, excitement, confusion, sickness, death, etc.

8. Bhayanaka: (dread)

It comprises of trembling legs and hands, eyes flitting to and fro, standing on the end, face losing color, and the loss of voice.

It's Vyabhikari Bhavas are, Being stupefied, sweating, stammering, confusion, fear, loss of memory, death etc.

9. Shanta (peaceful)
Shanta is serenity and peace. It represents the state of calm and unruffled repose that is marked simply by the lack of all other rasas. Because all emotions are absent in Shanta there is controversy whether it is a rasa at all. According to Bharata, the author of NatyaShastra, the other eight rasas are as proposed originally by Brahma, and the ninth, Shanta, is his contribution. Shanta is what the Buddha felt when he was enlightened, when he reached the higher spiritual plane that led him to salvation or nirvana and freed him from the cycle of life and death. Shanta represents complete harmony between the mind, body and the universe. Sages in India meditate for entire lifetimes to attain this state. In music it is often represented through a steady and slow tempo. Shanta is a clear and cloudless state. Shanta is untroubled steadiness. Shanta is the key to eternity.

Jai Shree Krishna,

First and for most, Thank you very much Unnatiji for such a poised question to which Neelamji has given a very insightful answer. Many congratulations for such a well written and researched posting. Its very nice to have you active. We so frequently use the word "Rasa" a prime example would be "rasa vai swaha" yet we have not yet discussed the permutations of Rasa and what it actually is. Obviously it differs when used in different contexts but I feel there is much more to expand upon this topic, so will give a plea to Neelamji and other prominent writers Vasantji, Sunitaji, Inaxiji and Pushtidasji to elaborate......

Jai Shri Krishna,

"RASO VAI SAH" means SHREE KRISHNA HIMSELF is RAS ROOP.

Shri Thakurji is full of bliss (Sat, Chit, Anand) and this can be experienced only by ANANYA BhAKTA who are the only Bhaktas qualified to unite with Shri Thakurji in the Ras.

Jai jai shri gokulesh

Vasantji, thanx for the excellent link.

Pushtidasji, the reason for which i placed the topic here is to know about Rasa shastra in detail. And as you stated in siddhant rahasya topic about "Ras-Shastra" (the science of being eternal happiness) i.e. there are two prominent, essential factors which are known as "Shringar-Ras", also at some place the rati word is used which is an sthaiyi bhav of shringar rasa. This increased my curiosity to know what exactly it is.

Jai Shree Krishna

Thanks Gopalbhai for visiting us.

Unnatiji, Palnaji and Neelamji, to understand Ras bhava it is essentila to look at the how and who instigated ras bhava? To look at that avenue, one has to first look at Rasa-vai-swaha term.

Neelamji has very beautifully described the different ras bhava and its deity colours. How did the colours were chosen? Who decided these colours and the swaroop it represents. Not only that we have ras bhava, but why these ras bhava is important. All these has to be understood step by step.

We got to first understand the basics and then climb to ras bhava in Gudh bhava which is more revealing.

Jai jai shri gokulesh

Just have something to add in this topic.

Chart of Nava Rasa

RASA => STHAYI BHAVA => MEANING => COLOUR

Shringar (Erotic) => Rati => Delight => Pale Light Green

Hasya (Humorous) => Hasa=> Laughter=>White

Karuna (Pathetic) => Shoka=> Sorrow =>Grey

Raudra (Terrible) => Krodh => Anger => Red

Veera (Heroic) => Utsaha => Heroism=> Pale Orange

Bhayanaka (Fearful) => Bhaya => Fear => Black

Vibhatsa (Disgust) => Jugupsa => Disgust => Blue

Adbhuta (Wonderous) => Vismaya => Wonder => Yellow

Shanta (Peaceful) => Calm => Peace => White

A shloka describing all the nine Rasas says:

Shringãram kshithinandiniiviharane viiram dhanurbhanjane
Kãrunyam hanumantham adbhutharasam sindhau girisdhãpane
Hãsyam shuurppanakhãmukhe bhayamakhe biibhatsamanyãmukhe
Raudram rãvanamarddane munijane sãntham param pãthunah.

Meaning:

He whose body is in the sentiment of Shringara as he moves with Sita;
In Vira, as he breaks the mighty bow;
In Karuna, as he protects th crow;
In Adhbuta, as he looks at the bridge of stones across the ocean;
In Hasya, as he watches Surpanakha;
In Bhayanaka and Bibhatsa, as he gazes upon others, except Sita;
In Raudra, as he kills Ravana;
In Shanta as he sees the Sages;
May, He, Lord Rama, protect us !

Amongst the first eight rasas, four rasas happen to be the sources of the other four rasas:
Shringara comes from Hasya, from Raudra comes the Karuna, from the Vira comes the Adhbuta and from the the Bibhatsa comes the Bhayanaka.

Raso Vai saha

Shree Vallabhacharya puts one magic and mysterious doctrine named "Viprayog." It is such a marvellous experiment that it gives such chances to devotee to convert his/her body and its activity into divinity of Bhagvad Adhiyas from its Dehadhiyas and thus gets adhikar . So this way the devotee gets the energy and activities from his/her birth to death comes before God for constant reflection. In this state the devotee becomes whole and sole of God and not a single and even straight energy and activity from birth to death goes else where except to God. This way God is the owner and lover of the said disciples.

In the above state there is no much difference in energy and activities between devotee and God and every moment of the life living of such devotee becomes feeler of God, His ability to love, understand, feelings and emotions etc. becomes synchronised with God. This position is only possible when ones Bhakti (service to God) has been to that top notch. (Please refer to Shree Vallabhacharya's 'Bhakti Vardhini' a treaty in which He has discussed in details about the origin and growth of Bhakti.).

Conversation between Prabhu and devotee and voice of God is so much valuable and useful than the story, novel of God. The praise for Lord (songs of praise) is even more enjoyable and it gives divinity and makes three (Bhuvan) Universes sacred. From Praises of Lord develops love and from love develops Rasotsav Bhava. The elements of Ashakti (devotional attachment) Vaysan (oneness) wholeheartedly with pure divine sight of him, he/she sees God and Gods body in every atom and material accessories of the world and in all elements of the world. This stage is now set for enjoying Raso-vai-saha form of God in all its permutation and elements of love. To indulge in this state, Seva is a deep spiritual divine sublime stream of the almighty God, where every devotee any sex gets complete attachment between God and devotee through the divine Technology of rasa and technology of adoptions.
