Jai Shri Krishna,

Here is the story.

Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "O Kesava, what is the name of the Ekadasi
that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Asadha
[June-July]? Who is the worshipable Deity for this auspicious day, and
what is the process for observing it?"

Lord Shri Krishna replied, "O caretaker of this earthly planet, I shall
gladly tell you a wonderful history that Lord Brahma once narrated to
his son Naradaji.

One day Narada asked his father, 'What is the name of the Ekadasi that
comes during the light part of the month of Asadha? Kindly tell me how I
should observe this Ekadasi and thus please the Supreme Lord, Visnu.'

"Lord Brahma replied, "O great orator, O best of all sages, O purest
devotee of Lord Visnu, your question is excellent. There is nothing
better than this Ekadasi in this or any other world. It nullifies even
the worst of sins if observed properly. For this reason I shall tell you
about Asadha-sukla Ekadasi.

Fasting on this Ekadasi purifies one of all sins and fulfills all one's
desires. Therefore, whoever neglects to observe this sacred fast day is
a good candidate for entering hell. Asddha-sukla Ekadasi is also famous
as Sayana Ekadasi. Just to please Hrsikesa, the master of the senses,
one should fast on this day. Listen carefully, O Narada, as I relate to
you a wonderful history from the scriptures concerning this Ekadasi.
Just hearing this account destroys all kinds of sins, along with all
obstacles on the path to spiritual perfection.

O son, there was once a saintly king in the sun dynasty whose name was
Mandhata. Because he always stood up for the truth, he was appointed
emperor. He took care of his subjects as though they were his very own
children. On account of his piety and great religiosity, there was no
pestilence, drought, or disease of any kind in his kingdom. All his
subjects were not only free of all kinds of disturbances but also very
wealthy. The king's own treasury was free of any ill-gotten money, and
thus he ruled happily for many years.

Once, however, because of some sin in his kingdom, there was a drought
for three years. The subjects found themselves beset by famine. The lack
of food grains made it impossible for them to perform the Vedic
sacrifices, offer oblations to their forefathers and the demigods,
engage in ritualistic worship, or even study the Vedic literatures.
Finally, they all came before their beloved king in a great assembly and
said, "O king, you always see to our welfare, so we humbly beg your
assistance now. Everyone and everything in this world needs water.
Without water, almost everything is rendered useless or dead. The Vedas
call water nara, and because the Supreme Personality of Godhead sleeps
upon water, His name is Narayana. God makes His own abode on water and
takes His rest there.' In His form as the clouds, the Supreme Lord is
present throughout the sky and pours forth rain, from which grow the
grains that maintain every living entity.

O king, the severe drought has caused a great lack of valuable grains;
thus we are all miserable, and the population is decreasing. 0 best
ruler on earth, please find some solution to this problem and bring us
peace and prosperity once again.

The king replied, "You speak the truth, for grains are like Brahman, the
Absolute Truth, who lives within grains and thereby sustains all beings.
Indeed, it is because of grains that the entire world lives. Now, why is
there a terrible drought in our kingdom? The holy scriptures discuss
this subject very thoroughly. If a king is irreligious, both he and his
subjects suffer. I have meditated upon the cause of our problem for a
long time, but after searching my past and present character I can
honestly say that I find no sin. Still, for the good of all you
subjects, I shall try to remedy the situation."

Thinking in this way, King Mandhata assembled his army and entourage,
paid his obeisances to Me, and then entered the forest. He wandered here
and there, seeking great sages in their asramas and inquiring about how
to resolve the crisis in his kingdom. At last he came upon the asrama of
one of my other sons, Angira Muni, whose effulgence lit up all
directions. Seated in his hermitage, Angira looked like a second Brahma.
King Mandhata was very pleased to see that exalted sage, whose senses
were completely under control.

The king immediately dismounted his horse and offered his respectful
obeisances to the lotus feet of Angira Risi. Then the king joined his
palms and prayed for his blessings. That saintly personage reciprocated
by blessing the king with sacred mantras; then he asked him about the
welfare of the seven limbs of his kingdom.

After telling the sage how the seven limbs of his kingdom were faring,
King Mandhata asked about the sage's own happiness. Then Angira Risi
asked the king why he had undertaken such a difficult journey into the
forest, and the king told him of the affliction his kingdom was
suffering. The king said, "O great sage, I am ruling and maintaining my
kingdom while following the Vedic injunctions, and thus I do not know
the reason for the drought. To solve this mystery, I have approached you
for help. Please help me relieve the suffering of my subjects."

Angira Risi said to the king, "The present age, Satya-yuga, is the best
of all ages, for in this age Dharma stands on all four legs. In this age
everyone respects brahmanas as the topmost members of society. Also,
everyone fulfills his occupational duties, and only twice-born brahmanas
are allowed to perform Vedic austerities and penance. Although this is
the standard, O lion among kings, there is one sudra who is unlawfully
performing the rites of austerity and penance in your kingdom. This is
why there is no rain in your land. You should therefore punish this
laborer with death, for by so doing you will remove the contamination
and restore peace to your subjects."

The king replied, "How can I kill an offenseless performer of austerity?
Please give me some spiritual solution."

The great sage Angira said, "O king, you should observe a fast on the
Ekadasi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Asadha.
This auspicious day is named Sayana Ekadasi and by its influence
plentiful rains will surely return to your kingdom. This Ekadasi bestows
perfection upon its faithful observers, removes all kinds of bad
elements, and destroys all obstacles on the path to perfection. O king,
you, your relatives, and your subjects should all observe this sacred
Ekadasi fast. Then everything in your kingdom will undoubtedly return to
normal."

Upon hearing these words, the king offered his obeisances and then
returned to his palace. When Dev Podhi Ekadasi arrived, King Mandhata
assembled all the brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas, and sudras in his
kingdom and instructed them to strictly observe this important fast day.
After they had observed it, the rains fell, just as the sage had
predicted, and in due course of time there were abundant crops and a
rich harvest of grain. By the mercy of the Supreme Lord Hrsikesa, the
master of the senses, all the subjects of King Mandhata became extremely
happy and prosperous.

Therefore, O Narada, everyone should observe this Ekadasi fast very
strictly, for it bestows all kinds of happiness, as well as ultimate
liberation, upon the faithful devotee.'

Lord Shri Krishna concluded, "My dear Yudhisthira, Sayana Ekadasi is so
powerful that one who simply reads or hears its glories becomes
completely sinless. O Pandava, one who wishes to please Me should
strictly observe this Ekadasi. O lion among kings, whoever wants
liberation should regularly observe a fast on this Ekadasi, which is
also the day when the Caturmasya fast begins."

Jai Shri Krishna,

It is also called Padma Ekadashi.

Little more addition to this Ekadashi

Without water, almost everything is rendered useless or dead. The Vedas call water nAra, and because the Supreme Personality of Godhead sleeps upon water, His another name is NArAyana. God makes His own abode on water and takes His rest there.

It is said that three things cannot exist without water; pearls, human beings, and flour. The essential quality of a pearl is its luster, and that is due to water. The essence of a man is his semen, whose main constituent is water. And without water, flour cannot be made into dough and then be cooked into various forms of bread, offered and eaten. Sometimes water is called jala-nArAyaNa, the Supreme Lord in the form of this life sustaining substance – water.

In His form as the clouds, the Supreme Lord is present throughout the sky and pours forth rains, from which grow the grains that maintain every living entity.

Deva-sayani, or Vishnu-sayani, indicates the day when Lord Vishnu goes to sleep with all the devas (demigods). It is said that after this day one should not perform any new auspicious ceremonies until DevotthAni EkAdasii (Haribodhini (Probodhini) Devotthaani (Uttana) EkAdasii), which occurs during the month of KArtika (October – November), because the devas (demigods), being asleep, cannot be invited to the sacrificial arena and because the Sun is travelling along its Southern course (Dakshinayanam).

Lord Shri Krishna concluded, “My dear Yudhishthira, PadmA Ekadasi is so powerful that one who simply reads or hears its glories becomes completely sinless.

Jai Shree Krishna

Unnatiji, Pusthidasji has mentioned in satsang that there is a certain time when the demigods go to sleep, during this time they are really absorbed in the meditation of Shri Thakorji and dont like to be disturbed. i'll let a senior vaishnav correct or elaborate on this topic.

Jai Jai Shri Gokulesh,

Agreed with Sitalji, Yes Gods do go to sleep as everyone needs to sleep for some rest and mostly Gods Like Shivji are actually meditating while in deep slumber and do not want to be disturbed.

Also Unnatiji, If you read the story of Brahmaji it clearly mentions that even He goes to sleep.

Jai Shri Krishna,

Some or most of this might not be relevant, so please only choose to retain that which is relevant and might make sense and discard the rest. Please excuse any errors/confusions and kindly help to correct the same. We would also appreciate further information and clarifications.

Looking at it from a basic view point....
This 'sleeping' of the gods is called Yog(transcendental) Nidra(sleep).

- just like we need to sleep and recharge our batteries, the gods/goddesses (devi shaktis), which are working day and night doing Thakorji's seva also need to be recharged (it could be said that this recharging is done though deep meditation upon Shri Thakorji, like Brahmaji did in the beginning, before He requested to do seva of creation ?) and perhaps this is the jeev's chance to substitute and help out (hence it is recommended for us to do more spiritual activities during this time ?).
... if we consider the time differences between our world and their world... then relatively speaking this is their night time ? (i think, it is said that approximately, 6 months of our time is 1 day for Brahmaji)
- In Brahma Loka the time would be different from other Lokas, such as Druv Loka, Patal Loka, etc...

- during partial dissolution of the creation (end of certain parts of the creation in between yugs ? ) the higher beings, such as Bhrigu Rishi and others transmigrate from their Lokas to other lokas until the final dissolution (end of all creation at the end of the 4 cycles/end of the kalp ?)

This ekadashi also signifies the beginning of Chaturmaas which is the four month period of the monsoon in India. The period begins on Ashadh sud 11, known as Devpodhi Ekadashi, when Bhagwan Vishnu goes for rest (yog-nidra) in Patal (underworld) at the doorstep of Bali Raja (in the next Kalp Bali Raja would be given the position of Indra - Vaman Avataar). The period ends after four months on Kartik sud 11, known as Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi – wakening time..

Hence it is said that during the chaturmaas, when all devi shaktis are 'sleeping' it is said to be the best time to increase one's spiritual activities... perhaps this increase continues to maintain the balance between positive and negative energies ? which otherwise might result in the increase of asuri shaktis?

If one is able to maintain their spiritual/saatvik activities during this 'sleeping' period, it is said to be very beneficial to the spiritual progress for a jeev ....

Jai jai shri gokulesh

The reason why i raised the query "Do really god goes to sleep?" is that what i heard and what i read here was different. Also at the 8th canto, chapter 22 of Shri Bhagwatji i have checked the statement was written as "Vamanji ee prasanna thai Baline Patalma mokliyo, Ne pote tena Dwarpal thaya"

And the article which i heard is as follows:

King Bali, grandson of Prahalada, was a great rakshash(demon) king. He managed to defeat the Devas by his valor and virtue. His physical strength and devotion to God were such that Indra could not defeat him in the battlefield or in the yagna-shalas. Eventually, Lord Vishnu had to come as Vamana to rescue Indra from his plight and thrust Bali into the nether world without a fight.

God is never cruel. He may appear to be so, but, like a kindly parent, He is sometimes cruel to be kind. Indra, though the undisputed Lord of Amaravati, is constantly in fear of losing his grip on power. Bali, Lord of Patala, though stuck in the niether regions, is secure in his mind that the Lord will take care of Him.

Having consigned Bali to Patal, the Lord promised him divine protection and immortality till the next era, when he will be crowned Indra. Till that time, the Lord Himself decided to protect him in person. As the Vaikuntha was bereft of Vishnu, Lakshmiji became restless and came seeking her Lord. Finding Him as a door keeper of Bali, the great goddess decided to regain her Lord by befriending Bali.

Disguised as a brahmin woman, she came to Bali and said, "O generous king, please offer me protection in your mighty palace, as my husband has gone away on some long task. I have no other relatives here and I need somewhere to live."

The king was happy to oblige and welcomed her into his palace and indeed, make her feel very much a part of the family. Happiness, wealth, harvest, all things auspicious had multiplied in his kingdom since the arrival of this mysterious brahmin woman into Bali's house. Bali was happy to have her stay in his home and treated her as his own sister.

Lakshmiji was sad though. Everytime she went past the main gates, she saw her Lord guarding Bali even from Yama. Lord of the Gods, Sustainer of the Universe, now a mere guardian of Bali. She was desperate to have Him come home, but the Lord would not abandon His devotee and refused to leave Patala.

One day, during the Purnima celebrations, Lakshmiji tied a thread of colored cotton on Bali's hand and prayed with a pure heart for his protection. Touched by her sincerity, Bali said, "Sister, you have always been very good to me. I am humbled by your love for me and my family. Your arrival has spelled good times for us here in the Patala. However, I see that pinning for your husband still grieves you and makes you sad. I want to see you smile sister. Today, ask for anything you want and it shall be yours. All I want to do is see you happy."

Sensing her chance, Lakshmiji said, "Only one thing can make me happy brother – your brother-in-law. Please ask Him to come home with me." Confused, Bali asked how he can make this happen. Overcome by shyness, Lakshmiji pointed at the gatekeeper of Patala and said, "Your guardian is my Lord and husband, He who is the Lord of the Universe and source of all things auspicious." Confused, Bali asked how a mere guardian can be the husband of such a virtuous lady.

It was then that Lakshmiji revealed herself as the Goddess Laxmi (Shri) and the guardian as the Lord Vishnu himself. Overcome by fear, Bali bowed and asked the Lord to reveal Himself. The Lord told him how He loved His devotees so much, He was willing to give up Vaikuntha and Shri for them.

Bali requested the Lord to go with Lakshmiji, but return later to be near him again. Hence, each year the Lord spends about 4 months of the monsoon season in the Patala with Bali, from Vaikuntha Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi – beginning of the monsoon season till beginning of winter.

Jai Shri Krishna/Jai Jai Shri Gokulesh,

very nice story... thank you.

Yog Nidra is not really sleep, but deep state of meditation (i guess the word 'sleep' is used loosely), where the gods are doing tap to please Thakorji and hence don't like being disturbed. Likewise, i guess from the story that in the case of Lord Vishnu, He would be visiting Bali Raja

an extract from a quote:

Chaturmaas (rainy season) is considered as Satva Guni. The four months of Unaro (hot season) are Tamo Guni and the four months of Siyaro (cold season) are Rajo Guni. Devtas also keep the Vrata of Chaturmaas performing great penance to please God.

... Narad and Brahma in Skanda Purana explain, ‘One’s mind and senses should be concentrated upon God. Such time should be used for devotion and meditation. One should renounce all ego as it is like poison to the body. During this time when God sleeps, man should always speak the truth as to do so pleases God. They should perform praise to Lord Vishnu and act to please him only. Chanting of his name derives salvation and so Chaturmaas should be used for remembrance of God. Brahmcharya (vow of celibacy) fuels Swadharma (duty) and therefore there is no other greater tool for such act. Anger, lust, selfishness and mundane desire are great enemies and so should be rejected during these months.

Skanda Purana further says, ‘In Varsha Rutu, when God sleeps, devotees of God should not sleep (in the sense that they should be spiritually awake in devotion to God). They should not sleep in a bed during such time (thus they should sleep upon the ground). Also they should refrain from aubergines (Ringra), watermelon (Kalingra) and radishes (Mura). Inedible substances such as garlic and the like should be renounced with greater effort. For one month, one should refrain from contact with one’s own wife - living as a Brahmchari (celibate). One should overcome the senses and perform charitable acts.’

Jai Shri Krishna,

It is said in Ramayan that when Shri Lord Rama when to exile for fourteen years his younger brother Shri Laxmanji also joined him.

During this period Shri Laxmanji had requested Shri Nidra Devi not to disturb him and he did not sleep for fourteen years as he was guarding Lord Rama all the time.

Jai Shri Krishna,

Nice flow.

Just to add as there is Chatumaas there also is Adhika Maas.

1 Lunar (phases of the Moon) year = 29.5305 X 12 = 354.366 days
1 Solar (phases of the Sun)year = 365.2587 days.

Also there is what we call a leap year every 4 years.

Thus one lunar year lags behind the solar year and one lunation has to be added after 3 years to fit the lunar year into the solar one. Astronomers have called this intercalary lunation as adhika month, and have asserted that this month is to be added to the lunar year.

Adhika (Purushottam) Maas, Since the calendar is based on the phases of the Moon, the transits take 354 days, 8 hours and 34.28 seconds.

This creates a difference of 10 days, 21 hours and 35.16 seconds from the actual solar year (365 days, 6 hours, 9.54 seconds) When the accumulated difference exceeds 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.865 seconds, an adjustment is made with an extra month (Adhika Maas), which carries the name of the previous or the next month, depending on the proximity of the month. Normally, seven extra months occur in 19 years.

One must do maximum seva/satsang/smaran during this period of Adhika Maas.
